Herwig Zens studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1961 and attended Oskar Kokoschka's „Schule des Sehens” in Salzburg in 1962. In 1966 he passed the teaching examination for art education, history and craft education and graduated the following year with a diploma in painting from Prof. Elsner. After completing his studies, he worked at several Viennese grammar schools. In 1977 he spent a long time in Greece due to illness and noted for the first time something in his "etched diary", which he continued for decades. In 1984 he started his Goya projections, which he completed in 1993. In 1987 Herwig Zens became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he had been teaching since 1975. Zens created over a thousand drawings, etchings, oil paintings and prints, which he presented in over 100 solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA. In 2001 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor of the City of Vienna and in 2011 the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. Herwig Zens lived and worked in Vienna.
