Hans Böhler, who was born into a well-to-do industrialist family, attended Jaschke’s painting school in Vienna and for a short time also the Academy. He was influenced by the Secession at an early stage, exhibiting his artwork there for the first time in 1908. Since 1909 he was a member of the Neukunstgruppe and maintained close links to Klimt and Schiele whom he supported through commissions and purchases. In 1910/11 he travelled around Russia, Japan and China for several months, in 1913/14 he visited South America and the USA, where he moved to in 1936. Arthur Rössler, a supporter of Schiele, published a first monography on Böhler in 1929 which was to be followed by further publications and exhibitions. In 1934 Böhler became a member of the Viennese Secession that dedicated a great exhibition to him in 1950. After his death in 1961, several retrospectives were held, for instance in London, Vienna, Munich.
