Jean Egger studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Art (Kunstakademie) and later travelled to Italy and Holland. In 1925 he moved to Paris where he found access to the circle of Paul Clemençau, the brother of the French President, who AS MARRIED TO THE Austrian Sophie Szeps. In 1926 he exhibited at the Salon des artistes indépendants and at the Salon des Tuileries, where his paintings were received well. Around that time he became friends with Signe Wallin, who became his muse and mistress. Up until his untimely death in 1934 Egger was a sought-after portrait artist and had many successful shows in Paris.   The intense relationship with his girlfriend led to intimate portraits and nudes. More often than not they are, as in this case, close-ups, depictions with a melancholic, pensive air. His portraits and nudes are more than just renditions of his lover, they also express the stance he took to the world around him. This is where Jean Egger’s true significance lies as an artist, this is what his contribution to modern portrait painting so unique.
