The painter and graphic artist Stephan Hlawa had a wide range of artistic ambitions. In Vienna he studied with Rudolf Bacher at the Academy of Fine Arts and also singing at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts. From 1932, he worked as a stage designer, especially at the Burgtheater, but also at the State Opera, at the Theater an der Wien, at the Volksoper, for the Salzburg Festival and abroad. Hlawa created over 300 stage sets for the Burgtheater from 1932 to 1945 and from 1948 onwards. In 1935, Hlawa became a member of the Künstlerhaus, and in 1956 he received the City of Vienna Prize for Applied Arts. From 1945 to 1948, Hlawa worked at the Innsbruck State Theater. In 1971, he was entrusted with the design of the arrival hall at the airport in Vienna-Schwechat. Works by Stefan Hlawa are included in the theater collection of the Austrian National Library and in the Theatermuseum.
