Alfred Eichhorn studied art in Vienna and Linz under Berthold Löffler and Anton Faistauer. Afterwards he moved to Berlin in 1932 and to Stuttgart in 1944, where he met Willi Baumeister, with whom he became a close friend. This relationship had a strong influence on his further work. From 1956 Eichhorn worked and lived in Munich. There he was, like Baumeister, a member of the group ZEN 49, previously called the Group of the Objectless, which was one of the most important groups of abstract artists in Germany. One of their goals was to bring non-representational, abstract art closer to a wide audience. The founding members included Willi Baumeister, Rolf Cavael, Gerhard Fietz, Rupprecht Geiger, Willy Hempel, Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff and Fritz Winter. Together with Willi Baumeister, Eichhorn founded the Eidos press, which is known for its graphic editions.
