Beckmann's family fled to Austria in 1922 as a result of the October Revolution and the subsequent civil war. Otto Beckmann graduated from the HTL Mödling and in 1941 from the Vienna Art Academy. He then became a teacher at the Krakow State School of Arts and Crafts. From 1945, Beckmann lived as a freelance artist in Vienna. As such, he became a member of the professional association of Austrian visual artists and, in 1951, of the Vienna Secession. In 1958, he was awarded the title of professor. In 1966, Beckmann founded ars intermedia in collaboration with the Vienna University of Technology as an interface between art and science. In 1969, he took part in the international computer art symposium in Zagreb. Today he is considered an Austrian pioneer in the field of media and computer art. Beckmann's exhibition activities included 25 solo and 75 collective exhibitions at home and abroad.
